Declined Card

I've just been shopping at my local Iceland. Went to pay by CC, entered my PIN in the C&P machine, and was told that my card had been declined. Tried again with the same result. I've previously used this particular CC at the same store without any problems.
Now I've never had a card declined before, so what does one normally do about it? Hope for the best that it'll work next time, or contact the CC company to see if they can shed any light on why it was declined?
I'm assuming that 'declined' is different to 'blocked' so this wouldn't have been due to me entering the incorrect PIN?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, you're right of course. Turns out that they'd blocked the card because a payment hadn't been made - though it was their failure to correctly set up a DD that caused the payment not to be made.
