Car tax rises? Can we buy a disc early?

hello all. Have noticed in press this morning that roadtax is set to rise for band H car, up £65 to 240...

HUge rise! We only have a focus and a focus cmax.
luckily the tax disc on the cmax was bought last week as expires 31 march.
However the taxdisc on the other focus expires 30 april.

hence my question: is there anyway we can "renew" the tax disc before the rise that is possibly happening on 1st april... (wish was april fool)

Is the rise confirmed - I'm finding it hard to confirm...

my hubby is disgust has even suggested sending disc back for refund, claiming car sold to me, and me applying for new disc - a lot of hassle but would potentially save us £5).

thoughts please....

thanks!

I believe you can only buy a disc 14 days before it comes into force, so the one that expires 30 April can be bought on the 16th April but not before.

you can return your present disc for a refund of any full months left
then tax the car early,so you dont get the full benifit but some

Actually this is not really possible unless you are willing to declare SORN and keep vehicle off road for minimum 21 days until re-taxing. The refund rules changed just over a year ago. Now you can only get refund if you sell vehicle, scrap it, export it, it's stolen or you declare SORN for minimum 21 day period.

If you send off refund and re-taxed during the 21 day period then your refund will not be paid. So in the OP's case you would lose 2 months tax (march and april), so obviously if this works out better than the increased cost then it's still do-able but if not....

this is right but it's 5th of month in which tax is due to expire so in your case, 5th of April is earliest you can tax for expiry 30th April.

I happen to know that there is a facebook campaign aiming to garner enough support to then petition government to bring in monthly dd's for car tax. ;)

DVLA have toyed with the DD idea and have done trails using staff members but it works out as an administrative nightmare as there are well over 30million cars in UK and within all the buying/selling/scrapping/insurance write offs it would be a costly task to keep tabs on everyone to ensure the DD's were paid. The idea was that even if you no longer had car you would still be committed to paying the full 12 month DD's for the tax amount, but could refund the tax disc mid 12 months! Also, what's stopping someone using other people's details to set up a DD etc.

I am ex DVLA and was lucky enough to pay for my car tax by DD for 2 years but at least they can keep tabs on staff! Not sure if they still offer it to staff now.

Hi, if you dont mind losing a months tax then you can retax your car too start 1st april, thus changing the anniversary of your car tax date. The prices rise from the 1st so you would need to buy tax disc before then. You will need to take your log book rather than renewal notice to the post office.
