Debit card payment made against closed account

Hiya, small question here. I closed a Lloyds account sometime around August 2008 and moved to Barclays.
A few weeks ago I logged into my Interactive Investor account and transferred some money over to buy some ISA funds, it all went through ok. Then yesterday I made another transfer but realised that the debit card number was for my old Lloyds account (but the expiry date is sometime in 2011). I called III immediately and they said that as far as they were concerned they money was there and to contact Lloyds.
So, I visited a branch today and they said that it wouldn't have gone through and III would probably contact me and say so. Later I visited my parents (where I lived until last year) and there is a letter waiting saying they accepted a debit card payment on the closed account and could I please post them a cheque! Presumably I will be getting another letter soon for the second amount.
Obviously I will send them the money, there is no question that I owe it, however I'm wondering why they don't decline payments on an account that was closed a long time ago? Is this normal practice, it seems a bit of a flaw!

Sounds like there could be a continuous payment authority on your old debit card.
When you close a debit card (or credit card) the account isn't actually closed.
If any payments come in afterwards, the account gets reactivated and the money paid out.
A CPA payment is an approved payment even if the card is closed.
Have search for recurring payments or CPA...
