I think most households probably already have a draw full of this type of bulb following the scandal that led to energy suppliers posting out over 150 million free in order to meet government targets on home energy efficiency.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/5701256/Government-ends-free-energy-saving-light-bulbs-scheme.html

With about 20 - 25 million households in the UK, that's an average of at least 6 free having been received by each and every home in the UK and with each bulb being claimed to last 10 years, I doubt many people want one presently, let alone 5.
Surveys suggested that more than a fifth of customers had not installed any of these, and that two thirds were "storing at least some" of them

I keep reading that these must not be put in household waste because of the nasties in them, and recycling facilities have not been developed yet.

I assume retailers have the same problem, and are off loading disposal costs as a result of redundant stock on to their customers.

Does anyone know of a responsible way of disposing of them?

    Interesting article.
Explains why the Phillips box had E-ON in big on the front now.

Where are all the FREE bulbs then? I've never received a free bulb in my life - ever! Who has all mine LOL.

In all seriousness though - keep 'em. I absolutely hate the light quality from these bulbs and won't use them in my house. I like my GU10 Halogens thank you :)

we only have 2 rooms where the bulbs can be fitted and so im happy with the quality they provide us.

It is only the large retailers who have stopped selling tunsten bulbs above 60 watt. Tunsten bulbs are available for commercial users, and no date has been given for their withdrawal.

In my area small electrical retailers, especially if they do contracting work sell 100 and 150 watt bulbs. If you don't like the low energy domestic replacements you can still find them.

I have new energy saving light bulbs, and I see no difference compares to previous standard light bulbs. I think they've improved dramatically over the last few years - I remember when I was a kid we had one in the bathroom that took an age to actually light up properly :)
