Insurance Excess

Just a quick question. My dad had a very minor prang in his car. Small dent on his wing, minor scratches on the other guys car who didnt seem too bothered. Exchanged details anyway. My dad accepted fault (although it sounded more 50/50 to me). My dad isnt planning on getting his minor dent repaired on his insurance, as he thinks it will costs less to do himself then pay the excess.

If you are at fault in an accident (not entirely sure he was, but thats irrelevant for the purpose of this), and dont claim to repair your car, do you pay the excess to your insurance company if the other car gets "repaired" for minor damages on your insurance?

Generally no. You only pay an excess for claims involving repairs to your own vehicle.
  • I would have thought that your dad would definitely be liable for his own insurance policy excess, regardless of whether he gets his own car repaired or not. If you think about third party cover, the excess is for the claim on your policy for the damage caused to the other party's property etc.

If the claim is on your dads policy and he admits the liability then he would have to pay 'his' policy excess to process the claim to the other party's repair

The excess is the contribution the policyholder pays to having his own vehicle repaired. I'm sure one of the insurance experts will be along soon to clarify this.

Sorry, the advice you received from Bellabooboo was not correct, you only pay an excess (With a very very small amount of exceptions) if you claim for the damage to your own car
