New fuse box

Can anyone give me an idea of how much it would cost to replace an electrical fuse box for a 2-bed flat?

Thanks

  • Anything from £200 to £350

I am doing one on Monday for a landlord (spilt unit with 1 RCD and 1 RCBO) for £250.
I have already tested the flat and the bonding and wiring is up to speed, so it's a straight swap with a bit of new testing (4 circuits)

Depends where you are OP - in London I would charge min £350 for board change and all testing. If required, a variable price for earth bonding to gas and water (anything from £50 - £150) dependant on accessibility.

Best to get a couple of prices and go with the sparks you feel most comfortable with

    Hope this helps

  • If it helps we had a new fuse box in our 3 bed semi 2 years ago; cost £450 all in.

Standard 17th edition board would be London£300 -£400, North £200- £300, Scotland £200- £300, South Coast £250-£350, Wales £200- £300 time would be about 4 – 6 hours dependent on electricians skills abilities… If rcbo's were to be used then add £25- £50 per circuit

    Oh dear

the new consumer unit costs £80-£110 alone, so they have used a cheap make or an old one

    ps
hope it wasn't an electruim brand (WYLEX / VOLEX / CRABTREE) as they have been subject to a product recall

Agreed, used cheap tat, didn't test and probably didn't give any certificates either!

    Come on BE, facts please. It's "alleged" that the makers have recalled certain production batches of 6, 10 and 16A Electrium manufactured (so Wylex/Volex/Crabtree brands) "B" type MCBs - nothing else. (Not CU's or other sized breakers or any RCBOs or RCDs). There is little solid info from them about this "recall" and MUCH debate on the various electricians forums about the subject, viz;

    http://www.talk.electricianforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8887

Maybe they haven't contacted every wholesaler as they can track just where the various affected batches went? Certainly two of mine have been asked to return them, but three others haven't!
  • To be fair I think Wylex / Crabtree are much better than MK / Hagar..

(OP: sorry about hijaking the thread slightly)

I have spoke to Edumndson (2 branches) one deied having any knowlege at all - must be company line if asked, the other (who I deal very reguarly) have told me that all 6A, 10A and 16A mcb's have been recalled and they are waiting on new stocks

Newey's (Ross Electrical) have been told the same and have had their own brand (rebranded Wylex) mcb's recalled as well.

Readng between the lines there seems to be a concerted effort to keep a lid on these things
