Paint Pads or Roller?

I shall soon be decorating the spare bedroom, just a fresh coat of paint on the (plain) walls, and I'm thinking of trying paint pads instead of rollering.
Any opinions versus the two options?
Thankyou

  • I much prefer pads especially for the ceiling no splatter, she who must be obeyed prefers a roller. I think it’s down to you.

Personally, I hated paint pads. I found a roller to give a better finish. The paint pad left as many 'brush' marks as using a normal paintbrush. Plus it had a habit of pushing the paint around so that it gathered in a big blob on the end of the pad and dripped off.. Maybe I just didn't get the hang of it though.

I vote for the pads, I can't stand the stipple effect that rollers seem to produce on walls and the microfine spatter that seems almost inevitable.

I also find pads much faster, but they do take some practice when you first use them (as do rollers).

I used to use pads but found them hard work "scrubbing" the wall with them, and as stated you end up with brush marks - but as long as you can stop it dripping off the ends they don't splatter.

For some reason I ended up trying a very short pile roller and now prefer that - seems to give the best of both worlds - the short pile means less back flick, there isn't really a noticeable stipple effect (certainly no worse than the brush marks from the pad) and its so much easier to run a roller around on a pole when doing ceilings.

Has anyone ever seen a professional decorator use a paint pad?

What I don't recommend is painting the ceiling above your stairs with a paintbrush masking-taped to a roller pole, because you forgot that you've thrown out all your rollers and you have a new carpet being fitted the following morning. :rotfl:

Oh well, maybe I'll try the paint pads when I come to do the small bedroom, worth giving 'em a try.
Off to buy a new roller and tray.
    Thanks for the replys

    rollers and brushes everytime.

ive only ever used pads once. on my DD student rented house. the girls who shared, bought the all the stuff inc the pads, without my knowledge.
we decorated the whole house in one day. (walls & ceilings only).
they were ok for cheap and cheerful jobby.
