Lawn is swallowing my stepping stones!!

And I'm not sure what to do about it??
My lawn is North facing & it does get badly water-logged when it rains so I'm assuming that's the problem
The stepping stones were already in when we moved here 3 years ago, but they are disappearing fast!! I noticed it last year when I was cutting the grass & think I need to sort something out before the lawnmower comes out this year!!
Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do, please?? The steps don't have to stay, but if I dig them out, what then?!

I love stepping stones, theres something romantic and reminiscent of childhood about them :j
To keep the steps:
-level steps out with a spade
-dig out two inches under where the step was
-fill with crushed sandstone or course sand to the previous mud level(aids with drainage and prevents sinking)
-Pop the stone back on top
To remove the steps:
-April is the best time for grass seed, grass seed is cheaper than turf so wait until April!
-Level out the stone with a spade
-Fill gap with a soil based compost
-Water soil well and leave to settle for a few hours
-Top up soil once settled to level
-Seed (on a calm day. lightly rake a little compost over- doesnt need to cover all seed) and leave!
Hope this helps

Thank you so much, that's a fantastic help!! :T
I'm undecided whether to keep the stepping stones or not, my daughters do like hopping on them though so maybe I should consult with them. I'm going to think about it & leave it until April, whatever I decide, thanks again.0 -
