Following on from this - how about a seed swap?
The seed packets always contain far more than anyone could use - and they're not really after their best after a couple of years.
I have a few different varieties and would be happy to pass on a few to anyone who'd like them.
    here's a list.
Lettuce - Lollo Biondo, Lollo Rosso, rossa Di Trento, Red Salad Bowl, Salad Leaves - Oriental Mixed,Tin Tin, Devil's Tongue, buttercrunch.
    Alo - some tomatoes
Gardener's Delight (cherry), Ailsa Craig, Principe Borghese, Cuor di Blue,
google them for a description, then pm me if you'd like some.

I've even grown a lettuce in a stork margerine tub with holes in for drainage.

Any container needs watering nearly everyday in summer. Lettuce doesn't need many nutrients, if you plant in new compost it will grow fine.

We love iceberg lettuce, so i think it's just a matter of taste. I must say though that the lettuces that are 'cut and come again' are very easy to grow and as it says you just take a few leaves at a time and they keep growing back.

Another "no vote" for Iceberg, sorry. My favourite is Romaine, a sweet crisp cos-type that keeps in the salad drawer for ages.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
