I'd start out with herbs- would you be able to put up a window box? You could you loose leaf salads too, even spring onions etc. Herbs wise I'd start with parsley, mint and chives if you havent grown much before, minimum effort maximum results!
If indoors or a sheltered window box you could grow chillies, I had a lot of success indoors and outdoors with a hybrid F1 variety (suttons seeds)/

Hi Fluffy you will get lots of advice on here from experienced folk and everyone is really helpful, i have only been growing stuff for 3 years and i have had successes and failures! but i might suggest herbs are a good bet, i find basil goes well on the window cill as does parsley and coriander if it gets good sun....i did grow chilli's as well and they worked pretty well.....my mum grows lettuce on her window cills too! lidl and aldi both do seeds for 50p (ish) so give a few things a try.....Every Penny's a prisoner :T0

I grow basil, parsley, coriander, chillies and salad leaves on windowsills.Basil does really well if grown in a clay pot, when it starts to wilt stand pot in sink/bowl of water for a couple of hours..make sure you then stand pot on saucer/lid that is waterproof.
My current chillies are 4 years old ..and I haven't kept count of how many they have produced. They will flower again once crop has been picked provided you feed them.I repot them once a year renewing half the compost.
You can save yourself a fortune growing young salad leaves.I sprinkle a mixture from seed packets using containers leftover from other purchases seem to work better than pots...and our guinea pigs love freshly picked leaves
