I'm in Scotland and when we got plans drawn up for an extension downstairs, this was what we had to do.0

I moved into a new build house 9 months ago and my toilet it accessed through the kitchen and there is only 1 door. I'm sure they wouldn't have been able to build it this way if it wasn't allowed?!?0

CM66, this is what the electrician told us but I thought it used to be the case.
Thanks0 -
Look at page 7 of this (1.2). http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_ADG_1992.pdf0

There's information about the English Building Regulations to be found if you follow this link

It used to be the case that you needed 2 doors between a kitchen and a toilet in residential premises. This is no longer the case and a single door is fine. Commercial premises remain as 2 doors.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

There will be a new Building Regs Part G out in April, although I don't think this has changed.
It should be available on the Planning portal site.
You do only require one door though, you will also need to have hand washing facilities, which must not be in an area for preparing food.
See section 4.8 and 4.10 of the Approved Document Part G.
Hope this helps.0 -

hi,are you thinking of a saniflo loo? if you do decide to do this, here's a bit of something to think about.....
we have a kitchen with a cloak room off it, one door. As the cloakroom was quite roomy we decided to install a downstairs loo and small sink. Fab idea in theory with us having a large family and small children.
Here's what we did'nt consider;
We did'nt think for a minute that other people's kids might come for tea and do the stinkiest poo in there EVER...just as you are cooking tea in the kitchen and about to dish it up!!
visitors to the house would be happy to use it, which then follows you have to explain to them its a saniflo toilet...therefore no sanitary towls/tampons etc can be flushed down it! (embarrassing and makes you look neurotic!)
The loo can't cope with large amounts of the thick, more expensive loo paper! the cheaper stuff generally mashes up easier!
Our saniflo loo lasted approximately 2.5 years, during which time it jammed up twice. my husband is a saint, twice we had the loo out, the saniflo unit off the back, dismantled and picked out tissue/babywipes/!!!! from the blades. The smell is horrendous, a horrible stale sewage smell. If you are not prepared to have to do this yourself at some point then are you willing to pay a plumber good money to do it for you? sorry to sound negative! we ended up taking ours out completely in the end, not worth the hassle.0 -
Thanks for the advice missindecisive we will bear this in mind.0
