Fridge freezing up

Hi all,

I have a upright fridge freezer, a Servis M7065 which is about 4 and a half years old.

Over the last few months we have noticed that the inside back of the fridge compartment freezes. We have defrosted regularly, the last time we left the fridge off for 2-3 days to make sure everthing thawed.

It's still not right, this morning the lettuce, which is in the salad crisper was frozen. well weird.

Called Servis who referred me to a repair centre who in turn didn't know much about Servis fridges. Said it's most likely to be the thermostat and quoted my £46 for a new one, plus £45 for an engineer callout and first 15 minutes of his time. Further time to be charged at £15 per 15 minutes.

Wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or can guide me on if it is likely to be the thermostat. I can pick one of those up for £30 online and could possible fit it myself....if I knew where to look :)

I once spent over £500 on a new freezer only to find out, a day or so later, that the door on the old one wasn't broken at all ... lo and behold..it just needed defrosting and it closed just fine. Go figure.

So think of how much money you've already saved ... just by being able to correctly identify the problem! :o
Sometimes you wake up grumpy ... but if you're wise, you'll let her sleep in.
  • vj,
Maybe a silly suggestion, but does your fridge have an adjustable thermostat?, mabe the knob has been knocked or turned by inquisitve hands. If so turn it down till it stops freezing.
Sometimes the contacts jam, try turning the knob back and forth, you should hear it click on/off if it is working properly.

A fridge thermometer is useful as a guide to whether you are wasting money by having the settings too cold.
    Moi....? ;)

We had a similar problem a month ago. For no apparent reason everything in the bottom half of the fridge froze, the thermometer showing -10.

In the end we solved it (hopefully) by adjusting the thermostat gradually until items started to thaw. By this time the thermometer was around +10. Once everything was thawed we gradually adjusted the thermostat back to its normal reading. After about 4 weeks everything is still ok.
  • From a technical viewpoint the problem would probably be the door seal too.
All air has a certain amount of moisture in it and if the door is not sealing it will keep getting in all the time, I would suggest that you defrost the fridge, then fill it (even with balloons) this would stop warm wet air getting in and the associated water with it. Your thermostat may well be allowing too much refrigerant thru the system, but the ice only comes from water getting in. in future try and keep as much stuff in the fridge as much as possible, will save you grief in the long run

    Thanks for all the info.

The thermostat inside the fridge goes from 0 to 5. currently at 1 and still freezing, but less so now.

quick look at the door seals dont indicate a problem either.

good idea re the thermometer - will get one in and see what the real temp is.
