Do I change motor or not?

I have a BMW 3 series Tourer from 1998 (R reg) with about 110,000 on the clock. It's in god nick but recently had to spending cash on repairs. I am driving 60 miles a day Worcester- Gloucester (and back) after changing jobs last year which is costing me £250 a month in fuel.

Would I be better off changing car or is that sort of mileage to fuel ratio about right regardless of the car/model?

According to Parker's:
MPG 34 Insurance Group 11 Euro Emissions Standard II CO2 Emissions 192 g/km

Any advice out there regarding the best cars/models for fuel economy? both recent and older?

  • If you like the BMW and ignoring other's petty prejudices they are competent quality cars as you know, why not get yourself a 320 Diesel, preferably E46, should see 45+mpg real world figures especially if you get facelift 04 on with the 6 speed box, 1500rpm at 60mph in top.

Do yourself a favour if you do, get the inlet manifold swirl flaps removed and the old style engine breather replaced by the newer type, roughly £200 all in at a very competent indy unless you can do the work yourself in which case parts are about £70.
