I went to my local cash machine on Saturday(the one I've used for years) and withdrew some cash.I got a printout and on it it said "surcharge £1.75"
There was absolutely no warning before I withdrew my cash I would be charged. Is this legal?

Link rules
Am I warned of the charge?
All cash machines give customers the option to cancel transactions to which a charge will be applied. LINK rules stipulate that an on-screen message, detailing all charges will always appear before the transaction is completed and the customer can then pull out of the transaction without charge. In addition to this, LINK Members have agreed that a sign saying 'this machine may charge you for LINK cash withdrawals' will be clearly visible to cardholders before a card is inserted in a surcharging ATM (either by physical notice on the machine or an up-front screen message, at the discretion of the ATM deployer).

Not sure about legal but it is going to be happening more and more and the only thing we can do is boycott the machines that charge. Where was the machine? I think Alliance and Leicester have changed some of their machines to a company that charges recently, I can't remember the exact details. I will have to have a look for the paper it was in but it might have gone in the recycling already.0

Sometimes there isn't an on-screen message, but there will be a notice of some sorts stuck on or near the machine.
I've had that done to me and when I looked round there was a tiny label stuck on the machine telling me I could be charged.Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you![/SIZE]0 -

They're definitely doing something wrong if there's no on-screen message.student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -
I have a bad feeling about these cash machines run by other companies.
A few years ago some of the big banks tried to push through charges for withdrawing cash from cash machines not owned by them. At that time they were forced to revoke it.
I have a nasty feeling that as these chargeable machines become more widespread, the number of bank run cash machines that don't charge will reduce. I suspect that eventually the no-fee cash mashines will only be on the walls of banks...0 -

The're are also some that work off the visa network rather than link, some are included in these big multi game machines/wifi hotspot things. But the warnings were good on the one used.
Can you despute the item quoting the link rules?0 -
Most of us go to the supermarket. Save yourself the effort and ask for cashback.0
