Best bank account for internet banking + general service

  • I have accounts with both HSBC and RBS, but have stopped using the HSBC account as I was so cross with their rubbish phone service.

Really happy with RBS, I like their online banking site and really like the telephony - UK only, and never seem to have much of a wait.
  • Lloyd's for me - super quick clean and efficient on-line banking service.

And generally a first class service with them all round!

Lloyds for me too. 25 years with them and never a gripe, phone, in ternet or in high street; although have not had complicated needs.
And the 4% vantage accounts actually work

First Direct's internet banking is truly awful. If you want a good internet banking, don't go there.

I would choose the Halifax account for the £5 each month.
I would have to disagree with the comment about First direct, I've found first direct to have really good internet banking, in my experience miles better than Halifax. I've regularly used it on both a mac and pc with no problems.

About the fee as mentioned above all you need to do is have another product and I think it can be just a savings account.

I've not used many other banks online services as I've not had the need to move away from first direct, though I've just opened a savings account with smile and it's not as good as fd, but Egg's online (savings) account service is good.
    Nearly debt free

Do FD do pre-approval cc's online etc if you hold an account?

Been with LTSB 10 years but getting slightly itchy feet to feel out the competition...

Rubbish...you just don't know what you're talking about...give fact instead of a statement which does not mean anything...

sorry but have to agree with nzseries1...whilst First Direct offer excellent customer over the phone their internet banking is pants. I'm now with Nationwide who offer a far better experience when it comes to internet banking.
  • actually this is real moneysaving. NSandI direct ISA has a horrid site that cut me off mid transaction last Saturday and will only issue new password by post - which has taken 6 full days. meaning I have had to pay £20.00 to increase my overdraft with the CoOp to cover the gap in funds that the withdrawal was supposed to cover.
and the CoOP site is hard to work out your lowest balance in any period. although the phone service is great and its otherwise ok.
the best site I have encountered from NSandI, Co-Op, Halifax and YorkshireBS is the YBS - by miles. Halifax try and sell you stuff all the time before letting you see your account info and the site frequently hangs. NsandI have numerous meaningless screens, can't believe anyone working for them can have ever looked at it.
I came on to see if there is a rating system for internet banking anywhere on this site - about time someone devised one??

I'm guessing you don't move money from one account to another very often, or you'd be aware of Nationwide's woeful implementation of Faster Payments (compared to First Direct's near-perfect implementation of it).

As far as ease-of-use & helpfulness goes, i've online bank details with:

    Halifax
    Lloyds TSB
    Nationwide

I find Nationwides extremely easy to use and very helpful
Halifax would come in next best, but nowhere near Nationwide
    & then Lloyds.
  • www.natwest.com i have their basic 'step' account -

you can check balance by phone, text and online, along with standing orders, and a visa debit card..

there is NO OVERDRAFT (and therefore no nasty charges)!
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
