  • it may be worth looking at effipro... I believe it contiains the same active ingredient as frontline (fipronil), now frontline is no longer under license to one manafacturer (but do check, I am not familiar with the cat version) - £10.15 for 4 pipettes here...

Yes, but do be aware that a lot of people have found that Frontline - or its active ingredient - is no longer effective against fleas. I now use Advocate or Advantage which mean going to the vet, but at least it works!
  • Oh wow I didn't know that, how often do you have to go for the vet treatment?

Sorry, I meant those other treatments are only available from a vet and cannot be bought on the internet without a prescription. Once an animal is registered at a vet they are normally happy to dispense such routine drugs without a check up of any sort.
One of the online pharmacies was selling off all it's stock of Frontline at less than cost price not so long ago....obviously because no-one wanted to buy it anymore! It is really annoying if you DO try Frontlin and it does not work as then you have to wait 4 weeks till you can use a more effective brand.
    4 very itchy weeks.

As long as the animal has been seen within the last 6mths otherwise you'll need a consultation.

Thanks Chameleon, I stand corrected! I seem to be a bit of a frequent flier at the vet office so it is never more than 6 months for me or one of the gang!

If you're a regular client you'll probably find the vet will be more lenient, especially if you're a multi-pet household. It's often not necessary to see each and every animal as long as they're registered and have been seen at some point in the previous 12mths ;)

I found ASDA pharmacy was very reasonable for frontline treatment.

Interesting to read that some owners are finding it is no longer effective. Do fleas become resistant in certain areas to certain treatments?

Frontline hasn't been as effective as it should be for quite a few years now, hence why they recommended applying every 4 weeks, whereupon it was initially every 8-12 weeks. I used to treat my own cats just twice a year (Apr/Oct) but now find I have to do additional applications in June/August.

This is in main due to people continually using the same products year upon year so the fleas build up resistance. Ideally you would use a different product each year and rotate them.
