    Thanks SavvySue, there's no handrail and tbh, when the time comes to have the lift removed then replacing the carpet will be the least of my worries.

    Hopefully that won't be for some time yet.....hopefully.

    You are certainly better off buying one. A second hand one can be bought quite cheaply and they are easy enough to fit.

    Thanks to all for all the help.

    Unfortunately the stairlift is no longer needed. My mother passed away suddenly in hospital on Sunday morning.

    Thank you all very much for all your help though, I really appreciate it.

    For anyone else looking to buy 2nd hand, they come up regularly on DisabledGear.com. At the moment there are 3 listed starting at £100. And one for £800 which includes an Acorn engineer to install and a three month guarantee.
