I would be really grateful if anyone could advise me re the overflow pipe outside. The pipe runs from the water tank in the loft and comes out quite high up at the side of the house. the water pours from it every morning and early evening (around the time the central heating is set to come on not sure if that relevant or not) if i run the hot water tap for a few minutes it stops. Is it something simple I can fix myself or do i need to call a plumber? (which i cant afford to do really)
thanks in advance

The ball float needs adjusting it's very easy to, it is exactly the same as adjusting the float in old style toilet cisterns0

Or it might need a new washer in the valve. (Only a few pence to buy)I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
ya can get a kit too to fix it
it consists of a washer among other bits

And if you are running hot water to waste just to stop it, you are literally pouring money away.No free lunch, and no free laptop

assuming a gravity system:
it might be the CH expansion tank. the boiler heating water is getting too hot and filling the small tank to overflowing.
when it happens, check out the loft, you may find a lot of steam up there!
one possible answer is to raise the expansion pipe higher up. if you have the space.Get some gorm.0
