Obligation to give notice when the end date of the lease is already agreed in writing

Last year I signed a six month assured shorthold tenancy agreement, and before it came to an end I signed an additional 'Memorandum of Extension' to lengthen the lease by six months.
Now it's approaching the end date (written on the Memorandum of Extension), but the landlord is arguing that I should also have given written notice that I intend to leave. The landlord wants me to continue paying rent for one month beyond the end of the lease.
Am I really obliged to give the landlord notice, even when the end date for the lease is agreed in writing? Neither the original agreement or the Memorandum mentioned any obligation for me to give written notice.
Thank you!

this is just my opinion but I would refuse to pay if you are sure you have gone through every bit of fine print and are sure that you are not required to give notice.
As if the above is true then, I would deem it the Landlord's responsibility to remind me my lease is due to expire and ask me to renew it.
That said, you may end up having to take them to small claims court to get your deposit back.
As I said, that is my opinion - hopefully someone else can back me up with some facts. In dreams there are no impossibilities0
