The Amex American Express Platinum Cashback Credit Card

Hi All,

This is my first post so please be kind and gentle and do what you can to answer my question based on fact or experience.

OK here goes.

Question:- If I buy something and pay via pay pal and pay pal takes the money for the payment from my Amex American Express Platinum Cashback Credit Card will Amex give me the 5% cashaback?

Thanks

Up to £2000 in the first 3 months - yes. BUT

    You need to
    1) Spend £3K to qualify (which means an effective rate of about 3.5%)
    2) Keep the card 13 months
    3) Spend occasionally - don't let it go dormant
    4) You won't get it on the pence, only the pounds - so don't do lots of small transactions e.g. sanwhiches, otherwise the rate reduces.

Apart from that, it's the best deal around.

Yes so effectively you get about 3.5% cash back for the first £3000 and then 1% till £7500. (so dont really get 5% back at the end of 12 months, max is about 3.5%).

    Isn't there a 0.5% band between £3K and £3.5K?
Please let me know as I'm in this band myself right now, so the inforamtion is pertinent to which card I use.

Yes it is 0.5% till £3500, 1% till £7500 and 1.25% after that. Your need minimum spend of £3000 per year to get any cash back.

Yes if you make sure the purchase is within the first 90 days of opening the account and only up to £2,000.

There is a review of this card here if it helps http://www.credit-card-comparison-on.../american-express/platinum.asp
  • Dylanuk, thanks for cutting through the waffle and actually answering my question directly. :T

Sorry if you think it's waffle, but if you don't comply with the conditions specified then you will/might not get the cashback.
For example if you don't spend £3K then you won't get anything.
    I don't think that's waffle - but never mind - I've got thick skin :-)

0.5% on Aggregate Amounts up to £3500
1% on Aggregate amounts between £3501-£7500
1.25% uncapped on aggregate spend above £7500.

Bonus cashback (5% for 3 months) is limited to £100 earn.
Minimum Spend threshold of £3000 to earn the cashback
This is applicable for all Amex Platinum Credit cards opened from 11th August 2009

Redemption of the cashback is made on the statement following the anniversary date & if the account falls 60 days overdue cashback may be forfeit.

If you do spend over 5k in the year ring up after you've had your cashback and ask to cancel, you may get some goodies.....

Bear in mind if they follow your instructions then you'll forfeit your cashbak if you close before the 13 months.
