Ford fiesta & young family

Hello

I've been thinking for a while now that I need a new car and I've just found out this week that I'm pregnant so it has made getting a new car all the more important (I think its the welding that is the only thing holding my current car together).

I had been thinking of getting a ford focus, but my husabnd is quite insistant that a fiesta would be better as my budget is only about £6k and I can get more for my money if I get a fiesta. I can get a really good low cost loan from work, but the catch is the car has to have done under 40,000 miles, so it can't be that old car.

Any thoughts?

  • Your going to struggle with a new baby and a festa. We have a pug 306 and by the time the push chair is in the boot there isn't much room for anything else. Don't even consider a 2 door you will never get the baby in.
Nothing to see here, move along.

I have a fiesta (3 door) and so does my brother (5 door) and I've found that they seat 3 kids in the back just fine.

They all have booster seats and they just fit, I think probably just 2 full child seats would fit.

The boot holds a buggy too just fine.

My dad has a focus and I think the only difference is the length, there's a wee bit more leg room but it's not much.
  • I had a fiesta. 5 door. It was fine when it was me and DS1 and his single pushchair but I coudlnt' get much shopping in as well.

Then I had another baby. 2 car seats meant the whole back seat was taken up and no-one could fit inbetween them. Then to get the double buggy in I had to take out the parcel shelf. Nightmare. Couldn't fit anything in it at all.

In short if you plan on expanding your family to more than one child don't get a fiesta. A C-max had loads more boot space in it. As did a mondeo. Focus isn't that much bigger to warrant bothering with in my opinion.

And I took my double buggy round ALL the car dealerships to see which cars I coud fit my pushchair in. I settled in the end on a picasso. I got the grand picasso too because it was even bigger and I love having space to carry everything I need and also to do a big shop. It also has 3 seperate seats in the back with 3 isofix points so I could techincally have 3 car seats across it if i wanted to. Not a chance am I having another baby quite yet though!!

I had a Fiesta when I had my 1st...I loved that car!! The car seat fitted in just perfectly and wasn't too bad getting it in and out as the seat slid forward and down. I had a britax Voyaga that fitted perfectly in the boot but there wasn't much room for anything else.

When I got pregnant a few months later, we went and got a Focus, with the 2 car seats in the back there's not very much room for anything else and by the time the twin buggy is in, there's no room at all in the boot!

Just as a side note - I'd swap the Focus for a fiesta in a heartbeat!

  • i used a 3dr with twin girls and found certain car seats wouldnt fit because the seat belt wouldnt go round it (rear faceing seats) or couldent get it between the seat and door pillar! so had to chose our travel system with care sometimes the shop had to call manufacter for vehicle suitability for us because they didnt know if it would fit! i would recomend a larger car if you can afford.

i would go for the focus. its a bit more robust than the fiesta, even although the fiesta is still a good car the focus is bigger and you will need space.
for £6k you should get a 56 plate focus lx or a fiesta on similar age plate, maybe an 07 plate.
have a look on ebay and auto trader to get a feel for prices.

  • £6,000 on a Fiesta will be a rather significant waste of money in my opinion.

Better to spend it on something slightly larger. For instance:

Immeasurably better than a Fiesta in almost every respect.

    Thanks guys for your comments.

I guess what doesn't help is that the top of my budget is £6,000 and I can't get a car with any more than 40,000 miles!

Ideally I'd like a Golf or Polo but I think that's just a dream!

I guess I just need to keep looking.

    What about a Vauxhall Astra?

    2007 56 1.6 Active with 28k cost me £5900 with 12 months warranty + RAC cover.

Quite a hard car to buy though in my experience, plenty of hire cars/other such dogs around. Lots to choose from though so DON'T buy the first one you see and don't touch any that seem too cheap.
