Question for anyone out there.

Are there special pensioners' tariffs for gas and electricity?

Cheers, HG

If you receive Pension Credit or Disability Allowance and another means tested benefit (e.g. housing benefit, council tax benefit, or pension credit itself), and your income (including ALL of your benefits) is less than £15k, BG have the Essentials tariff. Other companies have other Social tariffs with different eligibility criteria, so it's worth checking them all out to work out which will be the best for you. If you can't get onto a social tariff (because you don't qualify/whatever), an Online tariff would probably be the next best thing.

So far since I retired the government gave me £250 in December 2009 then £10 then £25 and £25 so that is £310 towards my fuel bill did you not get that?

I think that I am due another £50 still.

Why do you want a pensioners' tariff? Why not just choose one of the cheapest tariffs instead?

A social tariff has to be the cheapest tariff availble or else it can not be called a social tariff. I believe this rule can be breached once each year i.e. a supplier can release one product that is chepaer than its social tariff in each calander year.

It can however be of limited availability as you will need to pass certain qualifing criteria, the criteria is diferent for each supplier.

It will however not come with a cancelation fee so the T&C's will be better than the cheapest tariffs you will see on general offer. Social tariffs are not viewable on comparison sites so its not just a case of opening a site and running a comparison. you will need to ring up each supplier and get a quote.

    On another note...

I was under the impression the BG Essentials was closed to new customers and had been for sometime.

S&SE's Energyplus Care is generally the cheapest around, its standing charge only but offers around 20% discount from the standing charge and around 33% of the unit rates. No other supplier comes close to offering this level of discount. This Tariff is well below anything S&SE currently have on general offer

It became available again in June 2009 with different criteria than before.
