    my replacement condensing boiler (for a large 4 bed house) with a bit of new electrical wiring and a new gas link from the gas meter to the boiler, cost 1,380 two years ago with a local installer .. it took two men one day to fix but they did work hard

    That's around the price one should pay - maybe up to £2k, but no more.

    Yes, I'm aware of installation costs but unless you are changing lots of things it shouldn't cost the earth. Plumbers' incomes have suffered as a result of the recession and there is more competition than ever before, so you should be able to get a decent price.
