Pensioners - financial help for a new boiler

Hello,

My parents are both pensioners on a state pension and are living in a bought house. Their boiler has broken and the quotes the have received so far are between £3000-4500 so far for a new one to be installed. The boiler is the mail source of heating to their home and they live in Scotland. I was wondering if anyone knows of any financial aid they could receive to help them with the costs and how much they could possibly receive? Or indeed where i should be looking on the web or agencies to call. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pam

There is (hopefully not was) a scheme in Scotland where if your heating was beyond repair and you were over 65(?) you could get a new system fitted free. No need to be on benefits or anything. I cannot remember the name of this scheme, but we were told about it at "retirement classes" in 2007.

Having taken a look, it seems that that scheme stopped in April 2009, but there is a new scheme that they may qualify for....

  • Yes, that's the scheme they need to contact. More info about it at this link. Your parents should phone 0800 512 012 to get things started off.
  • Thank you both so much for your very speedy help! x

However, the quote should not be that much. I had one supplied and installed a year ago by a CORGI (or whatever it's called these days) engineer for £1750.

British Gas quoted £4k for the same boiler.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

http://www.warmfront.co.uk/ is the equivalent for England, http://www.heeswales.co.uk/ for Wales.

£4k for a boiler is a total con. You can buy a decent second hand car for less.

Don't forget that's only to buy it, installation will be on top but should only be a day's work unless lots has to be done to the rest of the system.

Probably British Gas - when my boiler needed replacing they quoted me nearly three times what a local installer did it for. He could have replaced my entire system for BGs boiler only price.
