Can I add fathers name to birth certificate?

My little girl is nearly four and I would like to have her fathers name added to her birth certificate now that we are on better terms!
Is this possible?
Thanks

  • as far as i know you can't, any copies you get must also be as the original - you should ring you local registrar.

You can get the fathers name added to the birth certificate at any time, as long as he goes along and signs a thingggy to say he is the father, the original one with different original name is then disposed of if you like and it will not come up on any details as had previous name (if you t change childs name back from fatheres name to maiden name it would alwasys have " previously known as " but this way it does not have any mention of previous name

my son only has me on his birth certificate. i was told by the registry woman that his fathers name could be added at a later date, but both myself and father would have to attend registry office together.
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

If your ex wants to be on the birth certificate, then he needs to go along to the registry office with you and sign the register. A new birth certificate will be issued, but this won't affect your daughter in any way, unless you want her to have her father's surname.

Of course if you were married to the father you can go down yourself and take your marriage certificate with you and put it in without him.

    Marry him! NO thanks.
Thanks for all your replies, I have rang the registry office twice and was told different things each time, so I'll try again.
    Again Thankyou

you can add his name as long as he goes with you.

I know for a fact thic is the case as I did it last year!!

When little miss divadee was born mr divadee lived in bournemouth and i lived in london, we couldnt arrange to get to the registry office together so i just registered her myself. Forgot all about it until last year and we both went down and did it.

You can do it from any local registry office, and you complete the paper work and sign etc... Then they send it off to the registery office where you originally registered the birth (in my case bromley). Then that registry office issue a new full birth certificate (there is a charge of about £4 i think) with both parents details on.

If you do in the future get married (unlikely by the sounds of it from your words!!) you will have to register the birth again. This is for the following reason

The natural parents of a child who have married each other since the child's birth are legally required to re-register their child. The marriage legitimises the child immediately, therefore making the information in the original birth entry incorrect.

I didn't know that! Better get myself down there pronto. When you say it's a legal requirement do you mean as in very naughty or just frowned upon? We got married 6 years ago
