Quotes for new boiler, seems excessive, help req'd pls

Hello, I have had quotes for a new boiler which seem really excessive.
They range from £2,000 - £4500.
I live in a second floor, one bedroomed flat, and my boiler+water tank are very old.
I recently had my boiler serviced and the gentleman recommended I get a new boiler.

I got the £4,500 quote of British Gas today, but friends and relatives who i have been speaking to have told me that the quotes of £2000 and above are excessive.

Can anyone help, please?

thank you

  • In my experience British Gas always quote way higher than anyone else. You would probably be better by going for smaller companies, and checking that they are registered with 'Gas Safe'. You don't say what part of the country you are in but we had a boiler replaced a couple of months ago to service a 3 bed house for £1112.00 and it is a reputable model.

Shop around you should find a much better deal.

I am in the South West of England.
Does it make a difference depending on what part of the country you live in?

ps British Gas were the only ones to tell me I would need scaffolding, as my flat is on the second floor.

What sort of boiler have they quoted you-combi or conventional? Output?
If conventional, does that price include changing the tank?
You need to give more info.

£2000 for a new boiler installation is about average I would think. It's hard to say though because you give us no details.

I done a boiler change on a 2nd floor flat a couple of months ago that needed scaffolding to get onto the roof for a vertical flue.

The scaffold added £400 to the job.
  • The scaffolding would cost around £400 but BG would have contractors that would charge them much less. BG also do risk assessments so means you would have several men arriving at you home which means they have to be payed a wage so there for the cost goes to you. I use to work for BG and would be willing to quote for you. I live in Essex but would quote and add approx 250 for travel and accommodation. Guessing on your brief description the cost would be £950 materials + 2 days labour £240 + £250 expenses + hire of 'mobile' scaffolding = £100 ... total = £1680

Tell me what info you need and i would be happy to supply it.
BG quoted me for a combi boiler. What does output mean please?
They also said the radiators would need repiping.
I think I have a vertical flue, it goes from the boiler to the ceiling (roof)

Most people I speak to says £2000 is excessive, see above post from mad_maz also.

What other details do you need, and I will give them to you?

Thanks EssexFitters for the quote, it gives me something to go on.

Output means the power rating of your boiler. Bigger systems require higher outputs.
Your BG quote should give the output rating in Kw-or it will be in the boiler model name.
Do you actually want a combi, since you currently have a conventional system with a tank?

I never got a written quote from British Gas.
Out put = Potterton Flamings 20-30 (whatever that means)
The tank is on its last legs.
If I don't get a combi, I will need a new non combi boiler and a new tank as the tank is on its last legs.

If essex fitters could add up, you will find his comes to £1780;)

Still think that £2000 is very reasonable for a boiler out, cylinder out, loft tanks out, new quality combi, no doubt new gas pipe which will have to be re-sized correctly, Magnaclean, new controls and possibly TRV's fitted, power flush etc etc, still you pays your money and takes your choice.
