I'm taking the private plate off my car and the DVLA have sent me the new tax disc and req number but how long do I have to do this? I seem to remember you have 72 hours to do the change but it doesn't mention anything on the letter, just about returning the old tax disc.

You have a 'reasonable' time to change the plates. Most people probably would be able to get to a shop to buy plates within say 48 hours.

If the original registration mark of the vehicle has been allocated back, do you still have the old plates?

    Hi there

I did this a few months back.....just looking through my paperwork. The Number Plate Authorisation Certificate says "this certificate expires 6 weeks from the date stamped". No duplicates will be issued.

i think I took a couple of weeks to get around to getting my new plates made. Will go and have a look on the DVLA site in a min.

In the process of trying to sell the private one :D

You will get a duplicate tax disc, showing the replacemnet registration mark, the disc on the vehicle showing the cherished mark will be voided, and should be returned the the DVLA office used to process the application, because they have issued the replacement under the new mark.

Therefore the new disc should be displayed on the vehicle, and the plates should match.
