MagiKey

Options
Anybody heard of a program called MagiKey?

This program appears to have installed itself onto my pc possibly by a pc robot or other hacker.
It keeps popping up everytime I try shutting down my pc.

It is not recognised by my registry nor is it listed in any of my programs and could be responsible for my pc disconnecting at random from the internet - I am currently on dial up regretably.

I admit my pc is not up to date. I am using Windows XP home edition service pack one (don't tell me off about not having XP2 upgradable for free, I know about it). I had to have my pc reformatted recently.

Can anybody also recommend any programs that prevent my pc from randomly disconnecting from the internet ie my phone line from disconnecting?

I shall be connecting to broadband soon.
I had it, changed addresses and lost it again.

How can I find this program and get rid of it - MagiKey?

Are you involved in the transport industry?

I suspect not, so have you tried searching your hard drive for an instance of this program? Click START.....Search and look for Magikey. Don't forget to select the "look in hidden files and folders" option.

Have you tried searching your Registry for any mention of it?

Have you tried running HijackThis and see if that picks it up? http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html
You can also check the box against the program in the HijackThis report to stop it running if it finds it.

Have you got up-to-date anti-virus and firewall programs in place? What about anti-spyware programs?

:o I did search my registry before posting here but failed to mention this.

HijackThis failed to pick up MagiKey but by that time I had extended my search to look through hidden files which picked up MagiKey as a temporary internet file, something I regularly empty anyway.

    Thanks for your help, Wombat.

I shall be popping into pc world to see about getting a copy of WinXP2 upgrade on cd.

Hopefully this will not pop up again.

Glad you got it sorted, Mr. V. It sounds like a new bit of spyware/adware. There's certainly no mention of it on the Net that I could find, apart from the transport thingy.

I will with little hesitation as soon as I get my broadband.
Couldn't get XP2 upgrade on disk from pcworld yesterday and failed to ask any of the staff about it.
