My Wedding has been double boked !!!!

We booked our wedding in Jan this year for Saturday 28th August 2010. Yesterday I phoned the registrar to confirm our booking only to be told that there was another wedding that had been booked at that time on that day - Oh my god !!!. I thought and got straight onto the venue they werent aware of this error until I told them and they checked. We are meeting with them this evening to try and sort things aout and find out exactly what has gone - so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think you need to ask yourself, what would you advise someone to do in your position? Cos my first thought is, see them, cancel the wedding, get all of your money back, and get a new venue fast.

But then, it's never that easy, is it? How much do you like the venue? Are there other venues that you like and have availability? Who was booked in first? Did they offer you a great deal that you couldn't get elsewhere? If they've mucked this up, what else could go wrong?

Just to be clear, the registrar is double-booked but not the venue?
  • Could you not get someone else to marry you?

In Scotland you can have a humanist ceremony if you are not religious. I am not religious and am having a minister from the Corinthian church marry us.

Who was supposed to book the registrar? Was it down to you or the venue? I presume you haven't yet given notice at the registrar's or this wouldn't have happened.

    Questions to ask:
    Whose responsibility to book registrar?
If the venue's, what do they propose to do? Can you have your deposit back?
Can you be married at a different time on that day? (ask registrar this)
Do you have any alternative venues? And can you find availability within your budget?
Have you got insurance at all? And if so, does it cover a basic mistake by the venue like this, if it is indeed down to the venue?

Mine was double booked too - We were going to cancel but now weve moved ours forward and the other couple have moved theres back - Its stressful but seems to be sorted now!
  • Sorry its the venue that has been double booked not the registrar.

We had a meeting with the venue last night and we are deciding what to do and waiting to hear back from them what level of compensation they are going to give us, they can run the two weddings at the same time but not sure thats what we want. We knew when we booked there was always going to be two weddings on the one day but one at 1pm and one at 4pm in dfferent parts of the hotel so you didnt have any issues with jumbling of guests, pictures e.t.c. I havent got any confiedence in them now that they will give us the speciall day we wanted without crossing over with the other wedding.:(
  • I'm confused - so you always knew it was going to be double booked? Or are the times changed? What are the new times? Can't you change a time?
    Bump due 22nd September

Sounds like the hotel has enough function rooms to cater for two weddings on one day, but because each wedding would want to use the outside space or nicer parts for photos, they usually do one wedding at 1pm and one at 4pm. However, on this occasion they accidentally booked both for the same time.

We viewed a venue with two function rooms so they can have two weddings on one day and didn't like it because hallways etc were shared. If the venue is going to compensate you and you could get out of your contract with them, you could look for a venue that only does one party a day?

Do the other couple know that you are both at the same time?
