Scottish Power charging for Electric not received

Options
Hi there,

Am after a bit of advice. A couple of years ago I ran up a big debt with Scottish Power resulting in me having to change to a Pre-Payment meter. I was fine with this and happily took on a PPM.

The initial debt was £765. This has been paid off in full and I have now switched provider.

However I have recently received a letter from Scottish Power saying that I owe then £96 for electricity provided over the last 1/4 of 2009. I have argued the case saying how can this be so when I was on a PPM and have also asked them to provide me with statements for everypayment made from when I went on PPM. These have been provided and I do not owe any money, yet they are saying that I owe them the money.

I don't undertsand how I can owe any money when I have been on a PPM for 18months and have paid back the debt to them.

When I tried to switch a few months back I couldn't because there was still outstanding debt, but I have now been able to switch as there was no debt.

Confused!!!!!!!! I know I am

Does seem odd, I suggest you ask them for written evidence.

Hi chunky77 - Write don't Email or phone to SP requesting detailed bills of the period, consumption and tariff charges relating to the debt that they say you owe - They have to provide this - If you still keep getting demands when then they have failed to respond, write agian, but this time head the letter Complaint just like that in bold.

This puts you onto an official track whereby they have to respond within a fixed time scale, and you can take the matter to the Ombudsman if you are not satisfied
    Good luck

When you switched supplier, did you provide a meter reading on the day of the actual switch? If not, the supplier would have estimated the reading which could have resulted in the debt (although it should also mean you are in credit to a similar amount with the new supplier)

Or, for example, you may have an older style PPM and the meter had not been updated to reflect the latest unit prices.

As others have suggested, ask SP to explain in writing why they believe you have a debt with reference to detailed bills/statements which they should also provide.

Were you paying back about £10 towards the debt?
You are allowed to change supplier with a debt up to £200 on a pp meter.
You may have still owed £96 of the debt

how often were you in emergency credit, if you dont top up also everyweek it builds a debt if not enouth on the meter for the standing charge.
