most people will take any recommendations or links posted in these forums, with a healthy pinch of salt and not take things at face value. but for those who don't, here's how they work:

some companies hire seo (search engine optimization) companies to post links to their websites in various forums across the internet, to bring in traffic to their websites. they pose as ordinary forum members, pretending to be helpful.

it's common practice, and in my opinion, a very devious form of marketing.

some people are rather good at it and very clever.

and some people aren't. like this chap:

tcapper

currently posting all kinds of useful links across the forums like:

anyway, tcapper also has a digg profile, where he is busy promoting the same sites.

interestingly, one of the sites he "diggs" is an article on how to improve your search engine optimization techniques.

that company is called SEO Web Optimization Services and their website is registered to:

(you guessed it!)

Registrant:
Mr Timothy Capper
* Mauntley Avenue
Brigstock
Northamptonshire, NN** *HF

so, congratulations Tim. you have succeeded in linking your company name in a thread title, containing the words SPAM and SCAM. :D

just to be clear, thats www.seo-web-optimization-services.com spam / scam forum posts.

i also have a digg account, so i'm off to digg this thread now. :D

not quite the "optimization" you were looking for, probably, Tim. :p

yes, it's interesting to see how these things work.

take a look at this example (NOT CONNECTED TO THE ABOVE COMPANY) posted in another popular forum, just as an example of the sort of thing that goes on:

    dollarperpost1.jpg

(i haven't linked to the forum, so people don't go looking for a side-job!) ;)

someone tells me tcapper is at it again apparently.

My main form of income is Internet Marketing, looks like Digitalpoint to me!

Forum marketing does work very well if you know how to do it. The thing is not making posts like you've quoted. You need to spend about a month reading up on your niche, join and then write very informative posts the actually contribute to the forum rather than spam it and just have a link to your mian site in your sig if they allow it.

Just looked on the forum I mentioned and it is that one. That is the only request ever on that forum to post on this on and as you can see it was made in Apr 2009, hardly a common scam to look for!

yes, perhaps i wasn't clear enough, i wasn't suggesting that was a common scam. i was merely using it as an example to illustrate my point that not all the links posted by some "newbies" are made for altruistic reasons. most people are fully aware of this anyway, but i just posted that image, because it's a clear, visual, actual advert.

i was sort of digressing from my main point, which was to show an example of how SEO companies attempt to use forums like this, by posing as "helpful" members of the public, to direct traffic to their clients, and end up looking rather silly when they get caught out :D

they must think we're a bit:
