Why now so hard to get that 1st rung on the propery ladder compared to years gone by?

  • OK, further evidence that the original post is simply untrue, by pure coincidence I met a couple at a party on Saturday who are first time buyers, and guess what - they've just bought the very same house that my parents first bought!

My folks bought the place, a 2 bed terraced in the Kingston area (SW London) at 25, my father was a mechanic and my mother a Secretary. This couple were around 27, a little older yes, but he was a Postman and she worked in a shop.

So are things really harder than they were 30 years ago. I dont think so, as I said before, peoples attitudes and expectations have changed. For a start "in years gone by" people got married at an earlier age so it was more normal for couples to be buying, but now people want to buy on their own - I doubt buying on your own was easy 30 yrs ago, just as it isnt now.

Becoming a FTB is as easy as becoming a full time MSE and working hard. OK not that easy, but life is hard, we all know that. But it certainly aint impossible - even ive done it!
