Huge EDF gas bill - trying to establish why

Reading the meter wouldn't have helped much as EDF didn't actually bother getting in touch until I switched to first:utility, so I had no idea what tariff we were on. In a really severe winter, would it have made any difference anyway? If it's bloody freezing, and you've already put the thickest jumper on, you turn the heating on, regardless of the cost.
It's not EDF's job to get in touch with you, you are using the energy so it is your responsibility to get in touch with them. Do you go to Tesco fill your trolley and walk out without paying? Do you think the police would be impressed with with you saying you didn't think you had to go up to the till, they should come to you? :rotfl:
All new supplies are on the standard (expensive) tariff until you swap off, it is no skin off EDF's nose if you stay on standard permanently! In any case if you had read the meter after one month you could have done a rough calculation, sh*t a brick and got the loft insulated in December. The way most people use it, then?
Common sense goes right over your head doesn't it?
You stated "Our lifestyle hasn't changed". I suggested it has, as it was a long cold winter you will have used the heating more days/ more hours per day compared with previous years. Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
