Old Magazines

Does anyone know of good ways to make some cash out of selling old magazines? We want to get rid of the ones filling up the spare room - on cars, computers, design, gadgets etc.

The ones like wallpaper*, ID and Blueprint don't really date, as they're full of design and images rather than news. If we have to give them away, I know about freecycle or just the local council's paper recycling, but is there any market for this type of thing?

Ta,

Magazines tend not to be good sellers on ebay purely because of the cost of postage due to weight. I have sold quite a few specialist magazines in the past, but frankly it is barely worth it after fees. Say someone is happy to pay £2.50 for a magazine, which is rare..the post costs for that might be £1.75 by the time youu use a new envelope, cardboard stffeners and a plastic insert, so all you can charge is 75p for the mag before p and p which will be entirely eaten up by ebay and paypal fees.

The magazine Wallpaper does seem to sell occasionally, see the completed sales list on ebay. Some went for as little as 1p, but one did go for £5.

Old pc magazines are worthless as they are so out of date that even enthusiasts don't want them. The same really applies to car magazines and such like.

I've got rid of piles of magazines at car boot sales before on the basis of 10p each or any 15 for £1 - usually you'll find someone happy to pay a quid for an armful on just about any topic. Not a great way for raising money but good for clear outs.

    Thanks for all your advice!
  • There's a guy in Newport Pagnell called Ken. (Graham) I think is his second name. He sells little else but that sort of thing. Try him. He might buy.

Unless they're really old, then they qualify as "vintage". Most 1990s car and computer magazines are virtually worthless, but if you put them in the attic (if you have one) for another 30 years, they'd attain "collectable" status. Almost anything, even literally rubbish (e.g. food packets) will eventually have a monetary value (albeit a fairly low one in most cases) if you keep it long enough!
Interestingly, though the new postage pricing structure makes most light items much more expensive to post, most magazines will actually be cheaper, e.g. a magazine weighing between 400-450g and fitting within the new Large letter dimensions when packed (maximum 353 x 250mmx 25mm thick) will cost 90p to post 1st class from 21st Aug, as opposed to £1.70 now.
Though a few magazines have sufficient individual value for ebay, for most, car boot sales (as Mark7799 suggested) are probably the best way to go if you have other stuff to get rid of too. If not, there's always Freecycle.
