Cow and Gate Vs Milupa Aptamil Baby Milk

Does anyone know if there is any difference between these two brands of baby milk? The boxes, ingredients, nutritional info and even the company addresses on the side of the box are virtually identical. We were advised by someone to try Aptamil to reduce our baby's colic, but having got the box home, apart from being slightly more expensive, the Aptamil looks virtually the same as the Cow and Gate milk we're currently using. Is this just some marketing gimmick?

Baby milks are all pretty much the same although each will claim differently but I can promise you they are all pretty much the same! Buy your milk from the local health centres as it is really much cheaper there, if you are on benefits of any description it is even cheaper. Check to see if you are entitled to free milk, you can get powdered milk for free, some specialist milks are available on prescription, so if your baby is really colicky, see your doctor.

If your baby is really colicky, (((hugs))) I know how you feel!!

colicky baby how dreadfull dd1 had colick for months, have u tried infacol or fennel drink or best of all just teaspoonfulls of cooled boiled water
all milks are basicaly the same tho some seem to suit some babies better.

winding tip,,,,, sit baby up staaight then tip back till lying on back then upright again, if this dosent work try lying i=on tummy on your lap very gently of course, it can help to dislodge the wind.
i am an expert baby winder!!!!
    good luck

My baby would not touch any baby milk except for Aptamil. I breast fed him for 5 months, and when I wanted to get him to have a bottle, he either would not touch the stuff and just turned his nose up at it, or chucked it straight back up again. My HV was starting to think maybe he was intolerant to the stuff.

As a last resort we tried Aptamil, and he liked it straight away. So there must be some difference, even if it is just the taste.

after breastfeeding my bubba, he took to aptamil straight away, is supposed to be the nearest one to breast milk...but i guess you have to make up your own mind. register with the 2 companies as well, to see if they offer vouchers etc off the product.

  • hi bit off topic but i used cow n gate with all 3 of my kids i sent husband out for baby milk when ds1 was 3 days old and my boobs were blistering!cow and gate is what he found at 3 am in the 24 hr tesco and we are still buying it 5 yrs later for my youngest! however c&g follow on milk seems to upset my kids apparantly there is a boat load of extra iron it and it has adverse effects on the nappy situation im not even trying it with my youngest!!!my friends baby also had an upset stomach after trying the same so be careful if y use follow on.
    cheers kate

we use comfort for ds2, now on comfort 2 as is 8 months, only difference is more iron so i don't think u need to change but u get boots points on follow on milk! no problems with constipation, he drinks water & has lots of fruit & veggies which i think helps. comfort milk worked for us, we also use dr brown anti colic bottles (buy from ebay as well expensive) although whether is the milk or just as he is getting older he is much better now & hardly any colic at all.
if baby has really bad colic a friend used cranial osteopathy - very expensive but baby changed overnight! might not work for all but if u desperate is worth a try. changing the bottles & the milk was enough for us though.
good luck & let us know how u get on.

  • Thanks for all the advice. We're already using the Dr.Brown bottles and they do seem to have helped a bit. I am yet to try the Aptamil milk as we've still got some C+G to use. I think as well as the colic, part of the problem has been the hot weather recently. When we first got Beth home, she was sleeping fine, all swaddled up in her blanket. But as its got hotter, we've been putting her down in just a nappy, and she seems to wake up really easily. It's still early days yet, as she's only 5 weeks old and everyone keeps talking about the 12 weeks period when she'll magically start sleeping through the night! Doubt that this will happen though!! Will have to go she's just woken up!!!!

I think aptamil is egg based, so it does absorb slightly differently - I could however be talking complete rubbish - I know it was recommended when my eldest was born because she was small, I got home and changed her to SMA (and then Farleys)

You just need to find what works for you. My daughter only had Aptamil (after I initially breast fed for a bit) and my 7 month old is now on Aptamil forward (after having Aptamil first from birth) and never tried anything else. Went through the coliky stage with both (particularly my daughter) but the HV said the best thing to do is persevere (sp) as chopping and changing milks can also upset babies. Tried the Dr Browns bottles with my daughter too but she just seemed to get over it in her own time.

My baby boy has also been a really sicky baby although he's coming through that a bit now - poor thing has some lovely clothes but you never see them because he's permanently wearing a huge bib!!!

Basically raising babies is a total minefield but you don't realise at the time how quickly this part goes - my daughter is three now and at the time when she had colic and screamed for hours every evening it seemed like it went on forever, but now looking back it feels like it lasted about five minutes!!!!

    Jxxxxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
