Barclaycard freedom replacing cashback?

Good morning all.
I currently have a Barclaycard with the cashback on it, 2% for grocery & fuel sales & 0.5% for everything else.
When i logged in this morning, i noticed there was a Barclaycard freedom balance indicator in the top right hand corner of the page.
Does this mean that the new Freedom programme is replacing my cashback? I hope not as the freedom doesn't look as good a deal as the cashback.
Have a good day all :)

    I think it might.

I have the same card and my online account also shows the freedom balance, indicator. It has one petrol transaction listed in the freedom section, which seems to have earn freedom money at 1%. Strangely this transaction made yesterday isn't on the main recent transactions page yet.

I will have to wait for my next statement to see if freedom is a replacement or in addition to the previous cashback. The letter about freedom that arrived yesterday gave no clue one way or the other.

If its a replacement I'll be cancelling the card.

I don't think it is a replacement - it's my understanding that Barclaycard Freedom only applies to those cards which do not already earn some sort of reward. So if your card already earns cashback or reward points then it won't be eligible for the Barclaycard Freedom thing anyway.

It's possible the indicator has been added online to every single account, whether or not it applies.

Just checked my account - it's described as Barclaycard Cashback and there is no mention of rewards, etc - just a link saying Barclaycard Freedom which if followed says I am not eligible with my current card.

So if OP has a Freedom balance it suggests his card IS being converted. Why I'm not sure - the 2% on petrol is a new one on me and it may be something to do with that - ie a non standard card.

That was my understanding of the scheme too.

I have this card as well and like you it is now showing the Freedom in top right hand corner. I have also had a letter saying my card will have the Freedom. I must say I was surprised as the Freedom terms say cashback cards are not eligible. See below taken from Barclaycare site.

Am I benefiting from Barclaycard Freedom?

Most Barclaycards benefit from Barclaycard Freedom, except those listed below:

My card is actually Barclaycard Platinum with this special deal of 2% cashback on petrol and supermarket spend. I got it well over a year ago and it had not been available to new customers for quite a while now. If Barclaycard have replaced this deal with Freedom I will not be happy as it is no way as good for me. If it is in addition that will be fine. Will just have to wait and see if I get the normal cashback on my April statement due about the 15th.
    Regards

    Hi all,

Just thought I would share an email I have had from Barclaycard:

    Thank you for your email.

From February 1st 2010 all cardholders who hold a product which is included
in the new scheme will receive a statement message and statement insert
promoting the upcoming launch. Further details can be found on at
https://www.barclaycardfreedom.co.uk. I can confirm that Barclaycard Freedom will
    not affect your current offer.

I hope that this information will help you.

    Kind Regards

I emailed Barclaycard, and got the following reply, it seems to imply the freedom cashback is in addition to the 2%/0.5% cashback the card has always had.
    Thank you for your e-mail.

I am pleased to confirm that Barclaycard Freedom scheme is an added feature on your card and will benefit you alongside any other offer on your account.

I trust this information is of assistance.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

    Kind regards

However it doesn't seem to square with the website which seems to imply cashback cards aren't included, as others have pointed out, so I await my next statement to see if the advisor is correct.
  • I also have a Barclaycard Visa Platinum with 2.0%/0.5% cashback (though there is no mention of it when log in and view the account)

I phoned Barclaycard this morning to check on the situation with Freedom and was catagorically informed that I will get Freedom rewards in addition to my existing cashback which will remain the same.

Can't see it's of much use though. The map I got with the letter showed 4 retailers in my area who have been "invited" to take part (one of those is actually indicated as being on a railway line, 2 are in residentail streets and the other one seems to be a factory unit on an industrial estate). When I log in to my account and search by postcode it finds nothing in the area!

I have to say that my 4 'local' outlets are either in residential streets (2), one seems to be in a field and one on a road with no properties at all.
I suspect that they are simply schematic maps and have no basis in fact.
