So, there you have it: men die early because they drink excessively, smoke a lot, sit on their bums and eat too much, while women get lots of lovely exercise cleaning, running round after kids, struggling home with the shopping and ironing the cat. Apart from that, they are biologically superior beings, genetically programmed to survive well beyond their 'best before' date.

female hormones do generally encourage weight to be put on the bum and thighs rather than around the middle (like men). high waist to hip ratio corelates with increase risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and the other major killers. women who are 'apple' shape also run a higher risk of these illnesses. it is scientific rather than just sexist.

Seems pretty illogical. Isn't longevity (following current retirement age) the reason they want to put the age up. If retiring at 65 meant a short-lived rest, they would leave retirement age alone.

well they kill two birds with one stone (so to speak) by increasing the retirement age. reducing state pension eligilitly and reducing costs to the nhs. economically it doesn't make sense to have people living for longer whilst economically inactive. depressing but true.

i personally think it would be good to encourage different living arrangements post retirement, especially for those who find themselves widowed or whatever. there must be lots of old people who get lonely in retirement. communal living (in terms of shared homes rather than retirement home as such) could help people have a happier old age. obviously wouldn't suit everyone but i certainly think a scheme that linked up old age home sharers could be a good idea. you could then release equity by selling larger home as well as have company. plus have someone to keep an eye on you etc etc. whilst many young people can't wait to get away from shared living i'm sure quite a few old people would like to do it.

The sexist bit was their rather stereotypical view of what men & women do. No doubt it still holds true for many, but the boundaries are much more blurred now for a substantial number of us.

    I agree about the science.

    Ah based on boeing workers.

So it is comparing those working with chemicals on shop floors (65) against mangers (50+) and office workers (50+ -65).;)

It's all about the money and the type of work. Engineering can expose you to some fairly nasty stuff over your lifetime.

Nothing to do with the lack of self restraint when it comes to tobacco, sugar, fat, alcohol, and the need to take regular exercise?

Now where is my next deep fried Mars bar?

There is a theory that the IPOD generation will be the first not to achieve their parents' longevity.

Are these people really "living longer" or just existing?

I have no desire to enter the 4th age and become "a crumblie" but as a man I only have a 25% chance of joining the other female 75% .

The average woman can look to 10 years as a widow.
    The average widower remarries.
    Women suffer men die.
Many women suffer a lonley old age marooned in their only remaining source of self esteem = the status conferred by their large family home. The only people they see are the ones paid to see them.

    88 for me.

89 for me - just in time to qualify for my state pension the way things are going.

I do like that way that that website gives you some sensible and practical tips to look after yourself. For example, I was told to check myself for cancer. I hadn't realised that that adds 9 months to life expectancy.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I thought women only out lived men by about 5 years now?
Easy answer, marry an older woman.:)
