If they have a £200k house how do they get HB and if they have sold their house and have 200k in the bank how do they get anything above state pension? I don't understand that, the 7years must be fixed when they either have a house or a wad of cash.

House you are living in isn't classed as capital. In fact, if it is for sale & you move out (for a valid reason, eg to be near an ill relative to provide care, or give care, or for medical treatment) then for 6 months it is ignored.

So, move to be nearer a hospital, rent somewhere, claim state pension & pension credit (& therefore hb & ctb). Your house is ignored as is for sale & you're within the 6 months.

Pension credit is awarded. Which passports you to full hb/ctb.

House then gets sold. Ring pensions service to say I have £200k. Pension service say don't need to tell us until you get re-assessed, in 6-7 years time!

    Shocking but true.

I had to convince some people to stop paying rent, as they had 5k credit on their account.

Shocking, but true. & the main reason is PR - local councils did not like the media becoming aware of & reporting on them prosecuting oldies who were overpaid, or committing fraud.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

really interesting. i'd like to see the daily mail do a special on silver haired benefit fraudsters rather than immigrants for once.

Maybe there is a distinction here...

Between people who actually plan for their retirement and those who just stick money into a pension? There is a huge difference.
