she will need to borrow a usb floppy drive if there isn't one built in, or get someone to mail the file to her.

she won't know anyone with one of these- how do you know if there is one built in- don't think so. can you buy a usb floppy drive- if so how much do they cost and where from?
    thanks both

If it is built-in, there should be a hole for it..

What is the model of the laptop?

Another alternative would be to buy a cheap usb flash drive and go to college, internet cafe or find someone with a floppy drive and transfer files on to it. It will also come in handy in the future, believe me!

Floppy drives are on their way out, so this would be my preference, rather than buying an external floppy drive.

This is normal for colleges to do - usual for audit purposes! Does your friend have any network space? She could then load work to this via college PC - they all have floppy drives! - access and complete work via internet, then complete reverse giving floppy back to teacher. Lots of my laptop students did this!

Have you got an MP3 player? You could connect that to the USB port and copy the file to/from that (once you've found someone or some way to copy the file from floppy).
