Containers against north-facing fence & oil tank?

I had to replace my old oil tank which was in a muddy spot round the back of the house, and the boiler man has sited the new green plastic one on the west-facing patio so it's easier for the oil deliveries. It's the size of a ship (well, nearly) and is right next to the picnic table, two metres from the house, and up against a 6 foot high north facing wooden fence.

What could I grow in containers to hide it? We eat out here a lot in summer but it doesn't matter about hiding it in winter. It would be nice to conceal it with something that grows fast and either a)smells good or b) we can eat. It won't get the sun until late pm and the spot gets blasted by the wind, so nothing tender. Will any veg do well in a north-west corner? I'm also broke after paying for the wretched tank :( so nothing too expensive...

Bumping this as I'm in town tomorrow and will look at growbags and planters. What might grow at least 4-5 feet tall in a container against a north facing fence? Do all veg and fruit need a lot of sun?

  • Not being a fruit grower I had a look on t'internet for you

You may get two blasts for your cash with gooseberrys or currants - flowers then fruit. Bare rooted plants from the likes of Ald! or Wilk0s would be fairly inexpensive.

I would suggest using anything that is commonly seen in UK hedgerows as typically these are very hardy, happy with little sunlight and grow quickly. As you are looking for something you can eat (or that smells nice) and is cheap I would suggest blackberries. You can buy blackberry canes that you plant in Morrisons for £1.99 or homebase 2 for £5.

Alternatively you could plant some climbing roses or a clematis (even both!) Both plants smell gorgeous and will be a feast for the eyes! :D

Fast growers for this year - nasturiums and peas - go for the old varities that have bi-coloured purple/mauve flowers.

Longer term a number of berries could be grown as cordons or fans to cover it.

but whateer you do, remember that the tanker peopel need access so you must not plant where they are going to be trailing hose etc.
