Art is a very high risk investment for most people. To be successful, you need to know a lot about art in general, what trends are currently like (i.e. what is fashionable and likely to stay that way), you need to factor in dealing costs, storage, insurance, etc. All in all, it's far more expensive than it's worth for many people.

That said, it's possible to make good money out of it. A fairly large pension fund at one point bought into some fine art collections and made roughly as much as its equity investments over a fairly long holding period.

My own personal take is that if I like a picture and can afford to buy it, I will. I won't expect to sell at a profit, however. As a result, most of the art hanging up in my flat is stuff I've taken myself and ordered on canvas from online photo companies!
