Hi
Going to get my 7 year old son a computer for his birthday.
But does it matter what processer it has?
Been looking online at ebuyer/dabs and can get a base unit and keyboard/mouse for around £235, but some have AMD Sempron 64bit 3100+ processer and the other a Celeron D.
He will just be using it for some kids games, BBC titles etc nothing with wilde graphics, might use it for the web if i can get my head round the wirless thing!
Thanks

No it doesn't matter if you are only going to be using simple games.. they will all work, just some are slower than others.
Have you got a monitor for it?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
AMD processors are better value for money0

The AMD Sempron 3100+ is a very good processor. About a year ago it was described as the best bang for the buck processor around. Certainly far better than a Celeron-D.0

Thanks for that. I have been looking at this https://www.ebuyer.com/uk/product/102520/rb/20677350728
I`m using a 17" crt monitor, i may give him that or buy a cheap tft from them for around £80.
Unless you know of something better, looking to spend around £300 including monitor.April Grocery challange £175

Hi,
I would always check out the deals on offer at Dell. I think Dell systems at the bottom end (cheap) of the market are hard to beat. The Dimension 3100C model is fine at around 350quid + tft monitor (usually 17"). The trick with Dell is to wait for the special deals to come round (patience requ.) ie double memory/free delivery/money off etc. Also use the QuidCo cashback site for a further 5% off (ie 15quid or so). Check out the RPoints forums (Computers and Software thread for reg. updates) and also check out hotdeals.co.uk website as well as good Dell offers are often posted there. Also last by no means the least this techie thread on moneysavingexpert. When ordering from Dell always remove the 3year warranty thingy and select 1yr collect and return service (saves 140quid of "inflated" quoted price) and avoid ordering the extras as they are often (nearly always IMHO) overpriced.
If your 7yr old son wants to play games then I would never suggest the PC. Go for a mainstrean games console. Use the PC for the internet/education/educational games and applications (works suite inc. in the Dell system I think?... is a great beginner/novice/home user office suite). Also I would avoid the Dell colour printer and buy your own that will take compatable ink cartridges like Epson and Canon(I think Canon take comps.... HP printers cartridges are expensive as no comptables exist (only refill services) as the HP cartridges are patented.
Whoops.... I'm starting to ramble as usual ....

This was along the lines of what I was thinking

That was just doing a quick search on the Dell site. I am sure more knowledgable folk in here know how to get more value for money from Dell for a similar/or the same system.
399 quid incl. 17" flat panel tft seems ok to me. The ebuyer system does have a larger hard disk but a 7 year old is going to find it hard going to fill 80GB. Its taken me 3 years to fill 130GB and I have installed countless games and applications!!!! Uninstalled very little! I doubt he will need 250GB.

for your 7 year old son, a cheap dell will be fine... no point in gtting something with decent processor, graphics or anything, because for a 7 year old if it looks good and works okay thats all that matters.
as has been said the games a 7 year old plays will not need anything more than the most basic of systems.
Only consideration is for when hes older he will probably want more.. but that will be several years (probably 5 or 6) in which case you'll need a new computer.0 -
Is the ebuyer one that bad?
looked at Dell and as you say £399 quid inc a 17" tft, but that is £100 more than the ebuyer 1.
Or should i wait until the Dell is in sale?April Grocery challange £175
