Autoglass scratched my windscreen (I think)

So Autoglass came out today to repair a chip in my windscreen
Everything went fine, sorted out the chip.
As I was signing the paperwork he made a comment about a scratch on my windscreen, saying that my car would fail it's MOT because its right in the middle of the drivers viewpoint

Now I've had this car for 2 years and I've never noticed this mark before
It's about 2-3 inches so I'm very suprised I've never noticed it before
I said this to the bloke who, just sort of shrugged it off and that was that
tbh i didn't really think much of it till i drove it later on today
This mark is so blatantly obvious, I'd like to think i would have noticed it before
I'm 99% I would have, but obviously cant be 100%

My question is do I bring this up with autoglass, if so how?
I don't want to go accusing anyone, but i'm not exactly happy this bloke 'may' have damaged my car

Any advice?

Unless you saw the guy actually do the damage, you have little or no hope of getting them to assume responsibility. You admit yourself that you can't be sure it wasn't there before, so not really a lot you can do about it...

Agree. Unfortunate situation but you can't blame anyone when you don't even know for sure yourself if it was there before or not.

They are supposed to evaluate the windscreen before attempting any repair in case it would require a full replacement. Which begs the question, why didn't he bring this to your attention before starting the work if it was already there!

Yeah I kinda thought that already. Oh well
It's just a pain in the !!!! because i'm so certain this mark wasn't there before, so now it's gonna cost me a new windscreen

The chip was near the bottom on the drivers side, the mark is pretty much above the chip, but directly in the middle If you know what I mean

Do they tend to inspect the whole windscreen or just the damaged area?

Whether he noticed it before and just didn't say anything to me till the job was done, or whether he caused the damage himself i guess i'll never know

I'm not having much luck with Autoglass these last few weeks.
It was a van of theirs that drove past me, that kicked up a stone that caused the chip in the first place
    They obviously hate me :D

is the scratch in the shape of a wiper arc or is it a more random shape? Can you feel it with your nail?
It only has to be a significant distraction for it to be an MOT failure
If you did not notice it , chances are that it is not bad enough to fail the MOT so dont worry.
The MOT is about common sense and allowing you to see ahead without a significant obstruction. It may be able to be polished but if it is next to a chip then that nay be risky because of the heat produced by the polishing process. If the technician got the repair and then the replacement then that would be great business wouldnt it?! Hope that helps.

  • Hi,

I have been a AG tech for many years know and as you can see by my name not a happy one (long story).

With regards to your scratch on your screen all u need to do is phone the call centre and tell them it wasnt there prior to the work done and you want a new screen, dont back down and you will get a nice new one. AG will back a customer 100% of the time and never beleive there own tech's. I have seen this many many times in the past.

When a Tech Does a pre-inspection of your car if u have a panel that needs re-spraying when the tech leaves just go up to it scratch it and call the call centre tell them that it wasnt there prior to the work being carried out and hey presto panel re-sprayed no charge to yourself.

AG bend over backwards to get cutomer satisfaction at a cost of there own techs in some cases losing there jobs for things that they didnt do. its all about how load you can shout.

I feel sorry for new people joining AG as Techs because you get no backing what so ever from AG. the motto in my brach is "Guilty until proven guilty"
