Can I cancel this direct debit?

I cancelled my gym subscription yesterday, it's a 28 day notice period. So my subscription ends mid-April. The money comes out of my account at the beginning of each month though, so I tried to clarify how much would come out in April, would it be a reduced/pro-rata amount. She didn't seem to know and said I could just cancel the direct debit before it comes out. Is this right? Will I get into any trouble if I just cancel it?
