Tracing a grave

Is there anyway to trace where someone is burried?

My friend is trying to trace the grave of the father to her 9yr old son unfortunately the family are not being helpfull and will not pass on the information as they parted on bad terms. she knows all of his personal details like dob & dod where he died

Any ideas would be great :-)

thank you

Can she get hold of the death certificate? Not sure if that will help though.

I would say with the information she has she could order a copy online but i dont think that states where a person is burried. We wondered if there is a government record somewhere or would it be a case of just calling the local churches to where his family live?

Most families post funeral/crematorium/death announcements in the local newspapers, not sure how you'd access them, but searching around the right dates could provide the answer. Of course he might be buried near where he died, or his family's home town, but if away from the home town you normally post announcements there too.

Funeral directors in the area, would have the information, but presumably confidentialty could stop them from disclosing information.
  • do you know which borough council he was likely to be buried in? If so it'll probably mean contacting each cemetery in that area for information.

Might involve a bit of work, but i think this type of information is available to all, rather like birth/death certificates.

If she knows what area he is from then she can findout from the local council. I had to do it for a member of my family and found out that way

Thanks all i did mention to her to contact the familes local paper to see if an announcement could be found in their archives she is going to look into it.

The guy lived in stoke but his family live in scotland and that is where he was burried.

Looks like there isnt going to be an easy way of doing this and is going to be a case of lots of leg work but she is willing to put the hrs in so her son can visit his dads grave. Thank you all :-)

  • There is a website called lasting tribute which holds records of obituaries. You can search for a person's name and it will show the obituary, which may say where the funeral was held and where he was buried. I have had a look and it does list those deaths for the whole of the UK. Hope that helps

  • Thank you Snapping :-)

    No problem :D
  • Could your friend's son write a letter to his father's family expressing the desire to visit his fathers grave, to pay his respects?

Obviously I don't know the history, but surely his family would want his son to be able to pay his respects????

Or am I viewing the world through my rose tinted glasses again?
