Objecting to planning permission - but can I get something in return?

I have received notice that they are planning to develop some old buildings (were industrial use) into homes/flats next to and behind my house.
The old buildings were not too bad, as you just had brick walls to stare at.
Overall I am in favour of the plan, as it makes good use of the space that is currently unused.
But I have the usual objections (privacy, traffic etc). Particulalry privacy as new houses will overlook our garden from the side and from the back. Currently other than our neighbours there is no-one overlooking.
I understand I can object, but what got me thinking is that can I ask for something in compensation as part of my objection (eg a few of the neighbours have suggested that we should ask for rear road access so that we can build garages at the end of the property that can be used to park cars. Others have been suggested compensation (unlikely I think!)
Anything else that is worth asking for? Alter plans?
Wondering if this is even possible, or any experiences from other MSE'ers?

I think that compensation would be out of the question as this would be (presumably) a private project and it won't make you incur out of pocket expenses. There is no harm in asking for an access road.[strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!0

to be honest if you haven't got legitimate grounds to appeal anyway, you won't get diddly, doubt any builder would "offer" it unless the development was in serious jeopardy from your objections.
however i'd try and find legitimate reasons to appeal first, then take them to the builders, getting a contract written up "no appeals by the home owners as long as xxxxxx and planning permission is granted".
the council however may not allow an access road or whatever else you may have planned.0 -
You may be able to get the council to enter into what is known as "A section 106 Agreement"
This will mean that the applicant agrees to do certain things to make the application acceptable to the council in planning terms - eg alter access roads or provide a play area or suchlike
This type of agreement can not be used for compensation or betterment, and must be relevant to the application
In this case, an access road and space for garages will only be considered if the proposal involved removing an existing road or garage/parking area. You can't just ask for a road and garage space as part of "not objecting" or agreeing to the proposal0 -
Thanks everyone for the comments.
The plans to have access roads for parking that will be backing onto the back of my property.
Rather than blocking it off, allow me to a build a full-width garage and I create a access door to the bottom of my garden??
Talking next to the other neighbours and seeing if they have had any thoughts / objections of their own.0
