A neighbour asked me to have a look on the comparison websites to see if I can get a better deal for gas & electric I have got their readings for the last year. They are with British Gas for both on the essential tariff, so I cannot compare the prices properly. I have put the Kwh in and compared this to the standard tariff, also entered the actual annual spend in and compared that against the standard tariff on both occasions it came up with the same results a saving of £258 over a year. Thinking this odd I pulled up the costs of that supplier and there isn’t much of a difference in tariffs from what they are on. £258 saving just cannot be right. Anyone have any answers

P.S. the £258 saving was with Scottish Power if your lurking.

Probably a fault. Try a different comparison engine?

Why do you find it odd that the comparison site gives the same saving whether you input the amount as kWh or £ ?
Using the standard tariff, the conversion to kWh from £ is not very complicated and so you should get the same results.

However, they will be misleading because you asking the comparison site to assume the neighbour is on the standard tariff and not the essentials tariff.

As you have the bills for a year, just input the annual kWh into the comparison site and get the cheapest option. Then manually compare the cheapest annual proposed charge to the annual charge the neighbour was billed on the Essentials tariff.

The unit charges may be similar, but is there any discounts included in the proposed cheapest option? e.g. Scottish Power offer £150 prompt payment discount for dual fuel pay on receipt of bill.
