after joining aol silver package my broadband connection was 2MB and was downloading at speeds of 130 ish kbps. all was well I was using my old thompson speed touch modem amd was going great guns.
Now aol sent me out a wireless router and after spending most of the afternoon setting the thing up it looked the part with no wires etc. all seemed fine untilnoticed the download speed has barely crawled over 30kbps. Not being overly familiar with wireless connections etc and having a sift through the loads of posts etc without much luck I was just wondering if this loss of download speed was the norm and if so is there a way to increase it or should I just go back to using my tried and tested adsl modem. cheers.

I was pleased to see a fellow AOL personage asking abt this - I'm with AOL BB Silver and have just rcvd their Netgear wireless Router and I asked yesterday in my own thread about buying a Netgear Adapter - I was all set to get one from Amazon wen I read the mixed reviews. In my thread the overall response seemed to be as many liked as disliked Netgear. But yr past all that!

Soz I can't offer u any helpful advice abt yr own situation but with purely selfish interests in mind I'll be watching yr space - if wen I've set mine up I can respond with anything vaguely useful I will.

i decided to stick with the wireless router but it only lasted a day, reverted back to my old modem this morning. I was finding that web pages were downloading a lot slower and playing poker online was a nightmare. It was a netgear model not sure of the specifics.
I suppose if you are just going to do a small bit of browsing etc then the wireless option is the way to go but I just found it a big let down in terms of heavy usage, just seemed far too slow.
And got the router free on sign up with aol, think the offer runs out some time in august but i've read a bit of haggling with aol may get current users a freebie as well.

You have obviously not set it up correctly as there should be no difference in the connection speed whether wired or wireless when using a wireless router.

your probably right, took ages to get it up and running but to be honest couldn't be bothered with the hassle of it all. I'll probably do a bit of research and try to understand the whole wireless thing before I attempt it again.

This is how to set it up, a router is far better than a modem, it has a built in firewall and NAT which is worthwhile using..gives you lots of added protection..

My guess is.. either you are connecting to someone elses router instead of yours, or your MTU needs adjusting, or you need to change channels..
