4,000,000 to need UK housing!

2-3 years, if that.

Oh dear......
You'd need to build at least 1.5 million houses. We currently build less than 7% of that amount per year......
There is no way in hell we could build enough, and no way in hell any government could find the funding.
More would get built than do today, but prices would be moon bound until that happened, and I think it would take closer to a decade to get it all sorted out.
If 4 million people came back this year, prices, and rents, could easily double within 5 years. It won't happen, as I can't see that many returning. But you are delusional if you think we could build enough houses to keep up.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

How about stopping immigration altogether! Except tourism.
Continuously building houses in such a small country is not sustainable.
The population needs cutting.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Look into China, when there is the polical will, access to a billion cheap workers, no democratic accountability, few planning laws, and a half Trillion dollars in foreign currency reserves, most things are easy.
Fixed that for you.....“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

However... lets look at recent QE transactions.
£200,000,000/4,000,000= £50,000
Can you build a home for £50,000..... you already know the answer.0 -

Impossible.
The economy would collapse under the weight of the pensions liability.
Every party knows we need another ten million people in the next 20 years. And we'll get them too.....“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

EDIT : Just had a look.
Nice new build starter home (2 bed) in Consett, £69,995. So I guess you can easily build a house for 50k.
Also plenty of unskilled workers around to use.0 -
After WWII plenty of pre-fabs were provided quickly for demobbed troops coming back to 'Blighty'. There's plenty which are still occupied, although mortgaging is a problem. I'm sure we could provide chipboard and tar-paper rabbit-hutches. Oh, wait! All newbuilds are like that...

It will be impossible to allow the population to grow. Something needs to be done about it.
Even China has its limits with the one child policy.
To simply not do anything is very foolish indeed.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Agreed, but does that mean they are more expensive to run and maintain?
People assume 'well built' is a good thing. With extra heating and maintenace costs, is it? Usually not.0 -

Here's a good history of House building completions.

It would seem that it would take quite a bit longer than 2-3 years to build homes for 4 million.
