Hi, Just a quick mention, NO housing benefits payable abroad. But DLA (care part only) IB and Carers all exportable. So how people afford to rent some where seems odd ? Guess they either somehow "own" their home or with family.

They generally sell up in the UK and then buy abroad; why would that be a problem?
  • Yes people either sell in the UK and buy or rent abroad, or some rent out of their own resources - not really a terribly difficult concept to understand! DLA and IB are not means-tested, so you can have much other money as you like, so can your partner. Just because you are on these Benefits does not mean you have no other money coming in.

What about people who are unfortunate not to own their own property was what I mean't.
As these benefits alone would not cover rental of an abroad property alone. May be if a couple are on both, they could do it. But I'm alone ? So out of the question I believe for me.

In your situation, if you couldn't work, you could wait until they were in receipt of their pension.

Unfortunately, not everyone can do everything in this life.

Well yes, unfortunately if you do not have enough money to rent or buy anywhere or a house to sell, then you can't do it.

Perhaps they will bring in means testing for all benefits?

Interesting to see that those who are out of the UK for more than 3 months each year, can't have free NHS, even if they own a house in the UK, registered at a UK GP etc. I read the government are trying to alter that as so many people work abroad now for more than 3 months. Also read that people have to pay their NHS bills now before they are allowed to apply for entry to the UK or indefinate leave to remain in the UK

You can have your say on the future of the NHS here (not sure how much of this wil be amended by the new government though)

RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

i once asked the dwp if i could go for a month and they said it was irregular but they would permit it on this occassion--lies lies and more lies---i feel cheated -my condition benefits no end from the brighter weather and have often wondered why my doc keeps advising me to go away!!
    That wasnt lies.

You can live abroad - but you cant just go on holiday for half the year.

I have been in hospital recently and I noticed on the letter booking me in had a section on NHS registration cards, it said you wont be refused treatment but it would be helpfull if you brought your registration card with you.

We all know about health tourists and maybe we should all carry our cards but that wouldnt stop british people who live abroad because you only get new cards when you move or ask for them if youve lost them, how could british people living abroad be stopped from using card that are old, many people living here have ancient cards if they can find them at all?

There are many benefits that arnt means tested and to means test them all would require much more manpower that would cost more, what would be the point of paying class 1 NI contribution if it wasnt for contributions based benefits?
